Chronic Kidney Diseases

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a slow, progressive condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function effectively. CKD can develop quietly, with little to no warning signs, until the kidneys are already damaged. That’s why early testing and treatment are so important, to help protect kidney function and support a healthier, longer life. At East Texas Kidney Specialists, we deliver compassionate, personalized treatment for chronic kidney disease, serving patients in Longview and throughout East Texas.

What Is Chronic Kidney Disease?

CKD happens when the kidneys slowly lose their ability to work properly over time. Healthy kidneys remove waste, balance fluids and electrolytes, and help control blood pressure. When kidney function declines, these important processes are disrupted. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, it’s possible to protect your kidney health and prevent further complications.

Symptoms and Signs of CKD

Early Symptoms

Early symptoms of chronic kidney disease can be mild and easy to miss. You may notice feeling more tired than usual, swelling in your hands or feet, or changes in how often or how much you urinate.

Advanced Symptoms

As CKD advances, more noticeable symptoms can appear, such as high blood pressure, nausea, hiccoughs, bad taste in the mouth, itchy skin, or shortness of breath. These may signal that the kidneys are under strain and need immediate medical attention.

Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen; reach out to East Texas Kidney Specialists as soon as you notice changes or persistent discomfort. Early care makes a big difference in protecting your kidney function and overall well-being.

Who is at risk for CKD?

Some people are more likely to develop CKD than others. Common risk factors include:

  • Diabetes – high blood sugar can damage the kidneys over time.
  • High blood pressure – can hurt the blood vessels in your kidneys.
  • Family history of kidney disease – if someone in your family had kidney problems, you might be at higher risk.
  • Older age – people over 60 may have some natural kidney decline as they get older.
  • Certain medications – like painkillers (NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, etc) or some antibiotics can damage the kidneys if used too often.
  • Ethnicity – African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans are at higher risk due to genetic and social factors.

How Is Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosed?

To diagnose CKD, doctors will:

  • Test kidney function – with a blood test to measure how well your kidneys are filtering your blood, and estimate glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR.
  • Check for protein in urine – protein in urine can be an early sign that your kidneys are damaged.
  • Imaging – your doctor may recommend an ultrasound or a biopsy to get more details about your kidneys.

If you have risk factors for kidney disease, getting checked regularly can make all the difference. At East Texas Kidney Specialists, we provide complete diagnostic testing right in our office and design individualized care plans to help you protect your kidney health.

What are the stages of Chronic Kidney Disease?

There are five stages of chronic kidney disease, starting from mild impairment (stage 1) to kidney failure (stage 5).

  • Stage 1: eGFR ≥ 90 with signs of kidney damage
  • Stage 2: eGFR 60–89 with signs of kidney damage
  • Stage 3a: Mild to moderate kidney function loss (eGFR 45–59)
  • Stage 3b: Moderate to severe kidney function loss (eGFR 30–44)
  • Stage 4: Severe loss of kidney function (eGFR 15–29)
  • Stage 5: Kidney failure (eGFR < 15 or on dialysis)

Treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease

Lifestyle Changes

Managing chronic kidney disease begins with adopting healthy lifestyle habits. Staying well hydrated, a kidney-friendly diet, regular physical activity, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol are essential steps to support kidney function and overall well-being.

Medications

Medications are often prescribed to control conditions that contribute to kidney damage, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Treatment plans are personalized, and medication choices depend on each patient’s unique health profile and stage of CKD.

Dialysis for Kidney Failure

For patients with advanced kidney disease, dialysis may be necessary to perform the vital functions normally handled by the kidneys. East Texas Kidney Specialists provides comprehensive dialysis care and guidance to help patients maintain the best possible quality of life.

Kidney Transplant Referral Support

When appropriate, patients are evaluated for kidney transplant eligibility. East Texas Kidney Specialists assists with transplant referrals and coordinates with specialized transplant centers to ensure a smooth transition of care.

FAQs For CKD Treatment in East Texas

Early warning signs of CKD may include persistent fatigue, swelling in the hands or feet, and changes in urination frequency or appearance.

CKD usually cannot be reversed, but it depends on the cause and stage. Early detection and proper management can slow progression, helping preserve kidney function and maintain a better quality of life.

CKD develops gradually over months or years due to long-term kidney damage, whereas acute kidney failure occurs suddenly, often as a result of injury, severe illness, or certain medications.

If you have CKD, limit foods high in salt, phosphorus, potassium, and excessive protein, as they can strain your kidneys. Always follow a kidney-friendly diet tailored to your lab results and CKD stage.

East Texas Kidney Specialists offers expert diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, continuous monitoring, and patient education to manage CKD and protect kidney health.
